Weather: Sunny, scattered clouds

 Time measured: 1:10 pm EDT

Each pair of students took a measurement, with one holding the stick and the other reading the protractor, positioned on the ground at the base of the stick. Most of the teams reversed roles and remeasured, and took an average of the two results. One student went to the library to check the weather station. We then collected data as a class, and calculated the average of those 11 results.

Each pair of students took a measurement, with one holding the stick and the other reading the protractor, positioned on the ground at the base of the stick. In the past, students have reversed positions and averaged their two results together, but most did not do that this time around. One student went to the library to check the weather station. We then collected data as a class, and calculated the average, the median, and the mode of all of the teams' results.

We've been predicting the next month's measurement for the past few months. In November they estimated December's reading as a straight-line extrapolation from the earlier three months. In January they estimated February's reading, with about half the class judging it to reflect October's reading and the other half all over the map. It's been fun.

What a difference from the conditions of the last reading! Too bad we were rushed today, it would have been nice to stay out a few minutes longer. The routine of taking the measurements has gotten sloppy, which will give us material for a good conversation about different types of errors, the rationale for repeated trials, and precision in reading scales.
