Beach Feature of the Week

Each week one or two of you will be responsible for presenting the "Beach Feature of the Week." This hopefully will be a rewarding and positive experience. The procedure will be simple. I'll tell you the name of the feature on the first meeting we have that week. Then you have a week to put the presentation together. I'd like it to be a PowerPoint.

Slide #1 An attractive title naming the feature
Slide #2

An image of the feature - This can either be a digital image you have taken, or an image taken from another source. In either case the image should have a photo credit.  It would be really great if we could keep this as local as possible. All of the features we will cover will be local.

Slide #3  Where is the feature  found on the beach (see diagram above)?
Slide #4 What forces created the feature?
Slide #5 What materials are found in the feature?
Slide #6 Approximately how long did it take  the feature to form?
Slide #7 Approximately how long will the feature last?
Slide #8 How does the feature affect the beach?
In addition to the PowerPoint, I want you to e-mail me the image as well as a summarization of what you said in the PowerPoint. The image, and the description will be posted to our bulletin board and posted to this site.

Coastal Environmental Phenomemon

Yes, it's a big title, but trust me - USE THIS ONE!!!! It has almost everything. It's a 40 page pdf file on beach features. I knew this was out there somewhere! Enjoy!

Glossary

This glossary is from the Coastal Zone Management Unit in Barbados! It's a great site. No pictures, but the definitions are easy to understand.

Glossary 2

This glossary comes from the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology. Thanks for the link Mike or Caroline!

Beach System

This isn't the easiest read in the world, but it has some great definitions and fair pictures. If you can't identify what the scientific name of your feature is, come to me, and I can probably tell you. Then go to this site to discover how it is formed.

Beach Dynamics

This is a general site that discusses the dynamics of wave action on a beach and identifies large, general areas on the beach.
