What is the name of your time period? What is the origin of that name?
What is your time
period’s nickname (if any)? In which geologic era is your time period found? When
did your time period begin and end?
How long did your time period last?
|
SLIDE #1
You can go to a variety of sites to get this information. I've given
you the "Gold Standard" with the USGS link. |
|

Show a map of North America during your geologic time
period.
|
SLIDE #2
This will work best if everyone gets their maps from the same
source. I reviewed quite a few sites, and this one was the best. These
are not the easiest maps to read, but they show North America in its
proper orientation. |
|

Show the map again with a symbol showing the location of
Scituate during your geologic time period.
|
SLIDE #3
All you're going to do here is make a duplicate slide and mark on
that slide where Scituate was located during your time period.
This is fascinating! The map gives you enough clues to show you where
Scituate's location was. It usually shows such features as the Great
Lakes, or the Florida peninsula. Your task will be to follow these
landmarks to find the approximate location of Scituate. All the places the location known as "Scituate" has
been! |
|

Describe what Scituate would have looked like during
your time period.
|
SLIDE #4
Check out these maps of North America to find out what
paleogeographers believed North America looked like. Find the location
of Scituate, and go from there. These maps are spectacular! The only
thing wrong with them is that they show North America oriented the way
it is now. They also will usually show a line. That line is the location
of where the Equator was during that time period. If you go back and
forth between the two maps (question 8 and 9) you should get a good idea
of Scituate's environment. Show a current picture
showing a similar environment. |
|
10 |
Name and show an Index Fossil from your time period.
|
SLIDE #5
Once again I've given you the "Gold Standard" for this. Index
fossils tell geologists that they are looking at a specific time
period in the rock. Many species of plant or animal lived through
several time periods, but index fossils only are found there. |
|
11 |
Describe a Lagerstätte
site from your time period.
|
SLIDE #6
How do we know what forms of life existed during these time periods?
Lagerstätten sites are the answer.
These are magical locations where organisms were perfectly
preserved. Not just the shell or the bone, but the soft parts! I've
managed to find one for each time period. It will be your task to
describe these sites to your fellow adventurers. Include the following
items in your description:
- What type of environment was it?
- How did the Lagerstätte
form?
- What forms of life are found in the Lagerstätte?
- What is the current environment of the Lagerstätte?

Describe an important life form from your time period,
it can be from any of the kingdoms or domains.
|
SLIDE #7
Each of these time periods was dominated by
a unique form of life.
In many
cases the period was called "The Age of . . . " That " . . ." is what
you should be describing. It could come from your Largerstätte,
but don’t feel limited to that. Answer the following questions:
- Describe the habitat of
the life form.
- Show an image of your
organism in that habitat.
- In the case of the animal, describe what it ate, and what ate it.
- When did the organism
first appear?
- How long did it last
before it went extinct?

Describe an important geologic even from your time period. |
SLIDE #8
This would be one of the key events from the history of
the Earth timeline. The obvious choice for this would be the event that
started or ended the time period. Don't limit yourself to that. As you
do your research you will come across some fascinating events. The
choice is yours! |
