Okay, we'll try it again. Back by popular (parent) demand is the weekly extra credit assignment! I will try and only have the topics relate to coastal geology, but that's not a promise!

This 79 year old lady was a current coastal geology current event last week.

1. What happened to Mrs. Buzzotta last week? (one point)

2. Where does she live? (one point)

Scientist for a Day - The Cassini Challenge

I walked you through this in class on the 29th. Don't pass up this great opportunity to get the chance to use a spacecraft currently orbiting Saturn! Last year three of my 8th graders tried. One actually won, and a second received a "best in category" award. This is not simple. You must submit a 500 word persuasive essay on why you should be allowed to photograph one of the three targets selected by the Cassini team. Visit the rules page for complete instructions. Take a chance! What can you lose? Write an essay and e-mail it to me. I'll correct it, and send it back until everyone is satisfied. Then we'll submit it before the deadline, and see what happens!

It's the Equinox!

1. Fall officially began at 11:44 a.m. edt today. What happened at 11:44 causing fall to start? (one point)

2. The other name for fall is the Autumnal Equinox. The term equinox literally means "equal night." That means there must also be equal day. Everyplace on the planet receives exactly 12 hours of daylight and darkness. But wait! Go to my Sun Angle Lab and look at the length of daylight results for September 22nd. What's true about them. (one point)

3. What variable caused what you said in number two? (one point)

Get all three right, and I'll give you five points.
After you've answered the questions, be sure to reference where you found the information. No citation, no credit. I suggest you use Son of Citation Machine to create your bibliography. It's great! Send me your answers in an e-mail by midnight September 28th

Get all four right, and I'll give you five points.

I didn't go with the hurricanes!

I fully intended to have a hurricane extra credit this week, but then this showed up! Answer the following questions about this montage of objects.

1. What two categories of space objects are illustrated in the image? (one point) Comets and asteroids

2. Emily Lakdawalla, a planetary geologist, put this group of objects together. What is so unique about all of these objects? (one point) They have been "visited" by  a spacecraft from Earth

3. The reason why she put the image together was because of 2867 Steins. On September 5th, 2867 Steins joined this very exclusive club. How did 2867  Steins join the club and what did it? (two points) The spacecraft Rosetta flew by and photographed it.

4. The object that did what you said in number three isn't finished. What will it finally do, and when? (one point) It will go on to photograph Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014.

After you've answered the questions, be sure to reference where you found the information. No citation, no credit. I suggest you use Son of Citation Machine to create your bibliography. It's great! Send me your answers in an e-mail by midnight September 14th.
